Happy with my purchase

I had (still have) a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd with i7-9750H, 64GB of RAM, 3TB of storage, 4K OLED touch panel and the GTX 1650 max-Q. I purchased this laptop in 2019 when it was announced (very pricey, but it was one of the best). It was very good at the beginning, but his thinness was a major flaw because it was overheating like hell with time passing. Since my work requires a powerhouse laptop with both the CPU and GPU, my laptops couldn't handle the workload anymore. I use a lot of virtualization labs and video rendering and it takes too much time to render one video session. So I looked for a replacement and found this Legion and I was quite impressed but a bit disappointed. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
- Very light: almost the same weight as my older Thinkpad
- The OLED screen is amazing (The thinkpad was a bit better because of its 4K panel, but less bright than the Legion)
- The CPU is sooo powefull and everything is snappy. The GPU is also very good for my needs (I'm not a hardcore gamer, just a casual one)
- The laptop is quiet all the time, but the fans kick like a jet taking off when I run some heavy tasks (video rendering) lol. I don't mind the noise for performance.
- The lid can be opened with one hand, not like my old Thinkpad
- The webcam quality is way better than my Thinkpad's
- You can switch between performance modes using Fn+Q shortcut
- You can overclock the GPU and undervolt the CPU (haven't tried it yet)
- the HDMI and power port are located behind the laptop
- Webcam switch to enable/disable it
Cons:
- Only 16GB of RAM for this price, which make it pricier
- No fingerprint scanner or Windows Hello compatible Webcam
- Typing on the Legion's keyboard is quite good, but not as delicious as the ThinkPad (1.5mm key travel vs 1.8mm for the Thinkpad)
- in my opinion, the numpad keyboard wasn't necessary since by adding it, they had to shift the keyboard to the left which needs you to get used to it.
- The black color is a fingerprint magnet.
- The battery life is average. Coming from my Thinkpad that had less than 2h of battery life, I can squeeze more than the Thinkpad if I enable the Quiet mode and reduce the screen's brightness. But it's more than enough for me since I'm plugged in almost all the time
- No SD card reader and not enough ports
Regarding the delivery, Amazon used the ' Lenovo Legion 5i Gaming laptop....' instead of 'Lenovo Legion 5 15IRX10', which is the accurate name of the product, and that created an issue with the customs. Please Amazon, next time use the real name of the product because there are many models and generations of the Legion 5.
I received the laptop 2 weeks ago, so I'll wait to see if there are any other issues.

Great buy

Battery life is great when just using it for business/work aspects off the charger, but it’s a gaming laptop at the end of the day.
All pros from me with one con, the cooling fan is loud and kicks on with even routine use. If it keeps it cool, then I couldn’t care less.

Review after had the laptop about two weeks

The performance is smooth across everything I’ve tried — from everyday tasks to heavy gaming. The build feels solid, the cooling does a great job while keeping the fan noise really low and the display is sharp and immersive.
At this price point, I feel like it’s absolutely worth it. The only area I’d suggest for improvement is RAM — the system is strong out of the box, but with more RAM it could unlock even more potential, especially for multitasking and future-proofing.
Overall, I’m very satisfied and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, high-performance gaming laptop.

Needs Dual-Channel RAM, otherwise great laptop

The build quality is solid and nothing feels cheap. The screen is amazing. The machine itself is snappy and fast in every aspect one would use it in. It's a gaming laptop with some pretty higher end hardware, CPU wise, so it does get a little toasty but nothing out of the norm for this form factor. To my knowledge the device comes with a Lenovo-custom version of PTM7950 that they call PTM7958 so temps should get better over time, not that they are terrible currently as it is. I personally did not have any wifi issues when I got this machine. After setup I did install all appropriate drivers for the machine without issue. The biggest annoyance is the single-channel 16GB DDR5 5600MT/s sodimm RAM that is installed. You are loosing up to 10% performance from this mistake alone due to halving memory bandwidth coupled with lower 1% lows in games making the device not perform as well as it should in CPU intensive tasks given it is a GAMING focused machine. I understand memory sourcing issues are likely the cause here as it's cheaper to put in a single 16GB stick then it would be to put in x2 8GB sticks but when paying this much for a machine one expects it to perform well without factory limitations holding it back. At least we get two socketed ram slots I suppose.

Lenovo makes great laptops

I was having issues with frames per second in Diablo IV and 7 Days to Die. My RAM use was at 97% so I added another stick of 16GB RAM to make it 32GB total and that solved the issue. Everything else is solid about this laptop. It is also nice that there is another slot to upgrade the storage in the future, but I find 1TB is enough for my use. I mainly use this to game when I go on a trip. I have a desktop PC for gaming at home.

Fantastic laptop for both gaming and work

It also has lots of different ports such as usb 3.0, usb C, and even an Ethernet port, overall I am very happy with my purchase

Very Nice for the price. (Watch that heat)

The thin build of the laptop vs my Old Rog Strix that's built like a tank. But do Feel like if a small breeze come through my house and hit this laptop that would be the end of it.
I've all ready knew about the Heat output. from previous Reviews Buying a Laptop cooling stand will keep it under 85c if you are gaming on the go This wouldn't be the first choice in laptops to take with you unless you have a Cooling stand. But getting to the brass tax.
The system it's self Hardware. is a 9.5 It would get a 10 if it had better heat dissipation.
Storage is Basic 1Tb which is the norm these day's for laptops unless you want to spend another 250-400 extra on a laptop with More storage and RAM For the price that you paid for this is at the neck for portability and work flow. Don't knock it till you try it.
Was easy to setup Windows installed most of what is needed before even getting to the Home screen.
The Screen display, Brightness, Vivid colors pop.
For being a 15' Laptop it is sturdy the base doesn't really have any flex in it unless you are forcing a bend. I held it with one hand for a few second while I was hooking up the stand.
Biggest issue is windows and their bloatware that is installed. McAfee is one of those bloatware that isn't really needed at all. Some of the programs that Lenovo have preinstalled are all right but I don't want to be in the middle of something and have a random pop up on the computer while am trying to do some type of work. I didn't really get in Lenovo AI that they have for this laptop yet. Going to test it out in the future when AI for me becomes useful in a way.
Connections, hooked to my Wi-Fi in just a few seconds. My controller didn't have any issues connecting with Bluetooth or my phone. Did see a small hiccup when downloading games from steam on there. Notice it does become a bit of a internet hog for other devices that are on the same network. I've never seen my PS5 buffer Hulu. I have 2Gbps Fiber internet. and the only thing hardwired in the house is the Main computer and Tv. But I am the farthest from the Modem/Router

Design 9.8/10 Could do a little better on the internals.
screen 10/10
durability 9.5/10 Still feel like I could break this at any moment.
